British student freezes to death at Val d'Isere resort on skiing holiday

British student, Rachel Ward, has frozen to death in the river in Val d'Isere, in the French Alps, after getting lost on her way home from a party during a skiing holiday.

Miss Ward, a 20-year-old undergraduate from Collingwood College, Durham University, was on her way to her apartment from a party in the upmarket French ski resort of Val d'Isere when the tragedy happened late on Monday night.

She had been taking part in 'On the Piste' - annual celebrations involving drinks parties and skiing involving hundreds of British university students.

Miss Ward got lost as she attempted to make her way back to where she was staying. She made a desperate call to a friend to say she could not find her way just after 1am, some half-an-hour after she had left the gathering of fellow students, all of whom had been drinking heavily.

Detectives fear that she slipped on ice and fell into the river, before dying of hypothermia.

An investigating detective in Val d'Isere said: "The young woman had been enjoying herself with friends when she decided to set off home alone.

"It was dark, of course, and temperatures were extremely low.

"She clearly got into difficulty as she tried to make her way across the resort.

"She fell heavily, but there is no sign of bruising or any other serious injury, suggesting that there was no struggle beforehand. Cause of death was hypothermia."

The detective said all those who had attended the party were being interviewed, along with a local man who found Rachel's body.

He added: "It was a lively party, with a lots of people drinking heavily. We are trying to establish the young woman's exact movements on Monday night.

"A full enquiry is under way, with local judicial investigators informed. Rachel's family have been informed, and are on their way to Val d'Isere.

"We are aware of the British university celebrations which take place every year. Many of those involved are being interviewed in connection with this tragedy."

Rachel's body was found on the edge of Val d'Isere, towards Le Laisinant and Le Fornet.

An autopsy revealed alcohol in Rachel's bloodstream.

Temperatures in Val d'Isere at night have been as low as minus 10 C in recent days.

Last week two British students died while ice-climbing in the nearby Chamonix region, with one sending a text to his girlfriend moments before reading: "See you soon. I love you".

Rob Gauntlett - 21 and the youngest Briton to conquer Everest - delivered the message to Lucinda Hutchins, also 21. Mr Gauntlett died alongside James Atkinson, 21.

Both were from West Sussex, and had studied together at Christ's Hospital School in Horsham.
